Sun Poker  Review

Sun Poker is a room on the Cryptologic network, along with other popular online poker rooms such as William Hill, Poker Plex, and Interpoker. Sun Poker's former name was Caribbean Sun Poker, before it was purchased by the British newspaper, The Sun. They share their software and players with all the other Crypto skin sites. They are a medium sized site with around 7,000 total players at peak times.

Sun Poker  Game Types:

Most of the full tables at Sun Poker are of the Texas Hold'em variety, both No-Limit and Fixed-Limit. There is a decent amount of action at 7 Card Stud and Omaha tables, though Omaha (and Hi/Lo) is almost exclusively Pot-Limit. Sun Poker does not offer five card stud or other exotic games. The competition overall is fairly weak.

Sit-and-Go tournaments are available starting at a $5 buy-in, but unlike most other poker rooms, there actually are not many Sit-and-Go players at Sun Poker. The action seems to stay primarily at the $5 and $10 buy-in games. One strange thing about Sun Poker's Sit-and-Go structure is that the blinds start at 7/15, while players begin with a normal $1,000 chip stack. This only amounts to a minor oddity, however, and the softness of the games makes up for it.

There are tons of Multi-Table tournaments running around the clock at Sun Poker, so there is almost always something for everybody. The problem with this is that the tournaments do not get as big as ones at other online poker rooms. With so many from which to choose, players don't bunch up in any single tournament. Multi-Table tournaments at Sun Poker have a fairly flat payout structure, which is great for those who want to make the money, but bad for those who are solely focused on winning, as the top payout tends to be a bit smaller than it would otherwise.

Sun Poker  Software and Features:

There is nothing spectacular about Sun Poker's software. It is functional, relatively attractive, and does it's job. It can bog down a little when multiple tables are open, but animations and sound (including a dealer voice) can be turned off to save resources. All in all, though, the software runs smoothly.

The Sun Poker lobby can be confusing, as it lists tables using three different currencies US dollars, British pounds, and Euros. It is nice that Sun Poker supports currencies other than just the US dollar. But with no filters, except simple column sorting, it is a little difficult to navigate the lobby. Not only are you looking at tables with different currencies, but there are the usual things like game type and stakes to keep track of, as well. Once you get used to the lobby, it is not too bad, but it could definitely use some cleaning up.

A second nit-pick is that when you load the software, no login window appears. You must click the Register button at the bottom of the lobby to login, or just sit down at a table and the register window will appear. It only takes one login to figure it out, but it's a silly little quirk that should be simpler.

The biggest problem with the software is that if the table is not the active window on your desktop, the audible alert to indicate that it is your turn does not sound. The table forces itself to the front, but there is no sound. This can be a major problem if you are: a) multi-tabling, b) working on one screen while playing on another, or c) simply not looking when it is your turn. It is very easy to miss a hand at Sun Poker if you are not careful.

Sun Poker has an easy to use hand history tool, called the Log Viewer, which can be opened from the poker table or from the lobby. You can retrieve up to your last 99 hands or 99 minutes, but if you want to go further back, you can also search up to your last 9999 sessions (which will generally cover all of your play). Individual hand numbers can be retrieved, as well. The hand histories can easily be saved to a text file. Sun Poker's note-taking feature is very good, but there is no buddy list option.

While the initial deposit bonus is not always that great they do offer very nice reloads from time to time. You just need to check the Sun Poker website for the appropriate reload bonus code. Bonuses are very easy to track via the Cashier window, under the My Promotions tab. Sun Poker has one of the most detailed bonus tracking systems on the internet.

Sun Poker  Behind the Scenes at:

Sun Poker has very good customer support. E-mail help is known to be fast and accurate. A toll-free number as well as internet chat via the website is also available.

The Cashier functions are easily accessible from the Sun Poker lobby. Unfortunately, they cannot be accessed while you are seated at a table. They now provide a GBP cashier so you have a choice of currencies.

Like any online poker room, Sun Poker uses strong security and has methods in place to detect cheaters. The company promises never to sell or distribute customer information to third parties.
