Bodog Poker  Review

Bodog started life in the online gaming industry as a sportsbook in 1994 and added their casino in 1999. It was not until 2004 that they launched their poker room. Bodog has had tremendous success in all three branches of their business; they are a stand-alone brand and have built a solid reputation in the online gaming industry.

In September 2006, Bodog was hit with a patent infringement suit by 1st Technology LLC. Half a year later, in March 2007, Bodog failed to appear in Nevada federal court, and as a result, had a $49 million judgment levied against it. The case was moved to Washington state for enforcement, and when Bodog again did not show up, the judge forced the company to transfer all Bodog-related domain names to 1st Technology. As a result, in August 2007, Bodog began using the domain “NewBodog.com” while fighting to get its old name back.

Bodog is a medium-sized site, and traffic is usually pretty good. They are increasing their real money players as they continue to service US customers after other sites have stopped receiving them.

They currently have three Poker Pros as endorsers: Josh Arieh, David Williams and Evelyn Ng, all of which enjoy varying success in the professional poker circuit.

Bodog Poker  Game Types:

Bodog offers the following games: Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud, 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo and 5 Card Stud.

They have solid action at most of the Texas Hold’em table limits, and you can usually find games up to $30/60 on a regular basis. The flop percentage of the short-handed Texas Hold’em (NL, PL and Limit) is often above 50%, which can make for some exciting (if not lucrative) play. It should go without saying that there is a healthy range of players with varying degrees of experience at Bodog (i.e. there are some fish to feed on). Their Heads Up tables do not fill up very fast and the stakes are not as high as other sites, but there is still good action if you are into that format.

They offer the usual array of Sit and Go’s in both single and multi-table, which fill up quickly with minimal wait. Bodog offers 'beginners’ SNG tables which allows for good practice without breaking your bankroll. With a large selection of Multi-Table tournaments, most players can find what they are looking for at peak hours, and the tourney line up includes regular tourneys, guaranteed, re-buys, non re-buys, freerolls, satellites and special events. They also offer turbo tournaments which have a rapidly increasing blind structure and are a good change of pace from the slower standard Multi-Table tournaments.

The Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo and 5 Card, 7 Cards and 7 Card Hi/Lo do not get much action outside of peak hours. If players are looking for extra action there are always the casino games, of which Bodog has a full line-up.

Bodog offers a first-time sign-up bonus of 10%, which is not the greatest - most sites offer a bigger incentive to make that first deposit. This used to be a “bottomless” bonus, in that players could receive a 10% bonus with every reload, but that has gone the way of the dinosaur. Bodog uses a “contributed hand” method for clearing bonuses, so players will have to put money into the pot to earn poker points for bonuses.

Bodog Poker  Software and Features:

This is another area that separates Bodog from the competition: instead of using the same software as its competitors, Bodog decided to customize its software with source code from the company Micropower, and it used its own in-house programmers to tailor Micropower’s poker software to Bodog’s standards. The software is by most accounts the best in the business. They probably benefited the most from their relatively ‘late start’ as a poker room from a software perspective, as they seem to have learned from other sites’ mistakes and successes so well that now (according to many poker players) they set the industry benchmark for application features and quality.

Bodog makes good use of filters in the lobby to help you navigate the site and find just what you are looking for. They also have a ‘quick seat’ feature which will get you right into the action. However, your may want to use the valuable information displayed in the main lobby, with such useful columns as ‘average pot size’ and ‘players per flop’. Oddly enough they do not display the hands per hour stat for their tables like most sites do. They offer short handed (6 seat) tables as well a choice of two different full table (9 and 10 seat) rooms.

They do have a slick “Picture in Picture” feature which allows you to see and play at three tables simultaneously, and Bodog even provides you with a choice of two different screen layouts for this feature. However you can only play up to 3 tables at once, which is considerably less than in many of the other top sites.

The poker rooms are all business: within the minimalist layout you will not find any chairs, end tables, plants or other accessories that you find at some other sites. The only concession is that you can change the table color to suit your preference. This layout favors the serious poker player who is just concerned with following the action. A neat Bodog feature is that when you fold your hand it stays visible to you, so you can continue to follow the hand and spend some time analyzing your decision.

The dealer action is fast and reading the cards is easy. Players can add a personal avatar which is fairly small and does not distract from the action. When you take your seat at a table you are always placed in the bottom center, a very handy feature when multi-tabling. The sound is very crisp.
