  • Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi is under the negative spotlight once again.  Mizzi, one of the top poker players on the internet, has been suspended by online poker room, PokerStars, for three months.  His latest transgression came in September, when, while on his way to compete in the World Series of Poker Europe, he realized that he was registered in a PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) event.  Mizzi asked a friend to play for him, and when he checked into his hotel room in London, he picked up where his friend left off.  According to PokerStars’ tournament rules, “…a player may not ‘hand off’ his seat in mid-event to a different player.”  Just as a criminal often receives a harsher punishment because of a past criminal history, so too did Mizzi in this case.  He had already been banned from Full Tilt Poker for buying the account of Chris “BluffMagCV” Vaughn with three tables left in Full Tilt’s Sunday $1 Million Guaranteed tournament (he went on to win) and he is also closely associated with Josh “JJProdigy” Field, a notorious cheater.

  • The Microgaming Poker Network, home to such poker sites as Doyle’s Room and Gnuf Poker, announced this week that it is IP blocking all players from thirteen states in the U.S.  These states, which are ones where there are explicit laws against online poker, are Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin, as well as Washington, D.C.  Interestingly, while customers in those states will no longer be able to play poker or casino games at Microgaming rooms, they will still be allowed to place bets in the sportsbooks of member sites.  Microgaming has had the rule in place to disallow players from areas listed above, but many of the poker rooms on the network ignored the rule and accepted customers from those states, anyway.  Now, the network is putting its foot down.  Not only will it block anyone from playing from those states, but it will also detect any IP proxy software, which is software that disguises the location of the player and makes the poker room think he is playing from a different state.

  • Rumors have been swirling for months about when the CBS show “60 Minutes” will air its piece on the UltimateBet and Absolute Poker scandals.  It has been widely thought that the report would be broadcast this coming Sunday, October 26, but it turns out that this is not the case.  The segments that will be shown are about credit default swaps, Gorongosa national park in Mozambique, and oil and gas expert, T. Boone Pickens.  The new guess by many in the poker world is that the online poker feature may air on either of the following two Sundays, as it would be more topical, considering the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event starts November 9.
