Poker News Digest 11/15/2008 – 11/18/2008

  • Rake-free online poker rooms have sprouted up on occasion, but none have succeeded.  That isn’t stopping PayNoRake.com, however, from giving it a go.  PayNoRake, which runs on Playsafe Holdings’ tiny network (Action Poker, Tiger Gaming), promises to give its players at least 50 percent of their rake back every day, but players can earn up to 100 percent of their rake back if they play enough.  The site calculates how much rake a player contributes (and it does use the “contributed” method) and bases the rakeback percentage on this figure.  The more rake that is contributed, the higher the percentage that is returned, up to 100 percent.  So, while PayNoRake bills itself as a “rake free” site, realistically, only the most devoted high stakes players will truly play rake free.  World Poker Exchange (WPEX) was the last online poker room to try the no rake system.  Feeling that it could afford to use the poker room as a loss leader for its sportsbook, WPEX did collect rake, but returned all of it to its customers each week.  The games were generally considered poor because the people who frequented the site were mostly skilled players who understood the value of no rake site.  The strategy did not work for very long, and WPEX has reduced the rakeback percentage to 65 percent

  • On the heels of Cryptologic’s announcement that it is merging its poker network into Boss Media’s International Poker Network (IPN), one of online gambling software developer’s major poker rooms has announced that it is moving to a different network altogether.  Beginning in mid-December, Sun Poker will become a member of Playtech’s iPoker network.  Sun Poker will automatically create new iPoker accounts for its customers, but players will be responsible for transferring their funds to the new accounts.  To ease the transition, customers will be allowed to continue playing on Sun Poker’s Cryptologic site through the end of January 2009.  Unfortunately, there will be no conversion of Sun Poker’s “My Poker Points” (MPP’s) to iPoker’s points system.  Instead, a special promotion will be offered to Sun Poker players, based on the number of MPP’s they hand when they switched over.  iPoker, home to such rooms as Titan Poker, CD Poker, and Noble Poker, is ranked as the third most trafficked cash game site on the internet, behind only PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, according to PokerScout.com.  It is the most popular of the networks that do not allow players from the United States.  Cryptologic, once one of the stronger networks, has almost fallen out of the top twenty.  The new combined IPN/Crypto network will rank seventh.
