  • The Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut opened Casino of the Wind, a new $925 million addition, Friday.  Casino of the Wind marks the return of poker to the Mohegan Sun, with its state-of-the-art 42-table poker room.  The casino was the victim of incredibly bad timing when it eliminated live poker from its gaming offerings in 2003 because of sputtering demand.  It just so happens that 2003 was the year Chris Moneymaker won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker.  Moneymaker’s televised $2.5 million victory, after qualifying on PokerStars via a $39 satellite, is widely regarded as the primary catalyst of this decade’s poker explosion.  Whereas poker rooms have sprouted up all over the country during the past several years, the Mohegan Sun went the other way, folding its hand just before the game’s dramatic rise in popularity.

  • A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, during which professional hockey player, Mats Sundin, will announce that he is joining Team PokerStars.  Sundin was the number one overall pick in the 1989 NHL draft by the Quebec Nordiques.  He played for Quebec from 1990 through 1994 before moving on to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he has played ever since.  Now 37 years old and the highest scoring Swedish player in NHL history, Sundin is a free agent, but is considering retirement.  On July 1, the Vancouver Canucks offered Sundin a two-year, $20 million dollar contract, which would make him the highest paid player in the league.  Sundin will be the second world-class athlete to join Team PokerStars, following tennis star Boris Becker, who signed on in November 2007.

  • Three sites under PartyGaming’s umbrella – Party Poker, Empire Poker, and Party Casino – received the “Safe and Fair” certification from the non-profit organization, eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance (eCOGRA), this week.  This certification indicates that these sites have met eCOGRA’s strict standards for quality control.  In earning the eCOGRA’s Generally Accepted Practices (eGAP) seal, PartyGaming had to prove that its players were thoroughly protected, that its games were fair, and that it, as a company is a responsible member of the community.  The timing couldn’t be better for PartyGaming, as the European Betting and Gaming Association announced recently that its responsible gaming standards will soon exceed the minimum requirements set forth by licensing jurisdictions in the European Union.  The three sites already have GamCare Certification, which is awarded to sites which display high standards in responsible gambling.
