Poker News Digest 8/10/2008 – 8/12/2008

  • The poker room at the Excalibur on the Las Vegas Strip will become the gambling mecca’s first fully automated poker room.  On August 18 at two o’clock in the morning, the room will close down for a few days while the changeover is made.  Twelve computerized PokerPro tables by PokerTek will be installed in the redesigned facility, which will reopen without dealers, cards, and chips.  Players may be a bit hesitant to try the new tables at first, but those who give them a try may well find the speed of play and savings from lower rake and no tips quite rewarding.  The Excalibur will be laying off most of its poker room staff.

  • Almost a year ago, Natalie “TheV0id” Teltscher won the 2007 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), pocketing over $1 million.  About two weeks later, PokerStars disqualified the champ for cheating, although the online poker room did not state exactly what rules were broken.  Teltscher, in turn, sued PokerStars in the Isle of Man, claiming innocence.  On Monday, however, she withdrew the suit, admitting that her brother, Mark, who won the European Poker Tour’s London event in 2005, was really the one playing.  As it turns out, this is what PokerStars alleged all along.  Natalie Teltscher also agreed to shoulder a significant portion of PokerStars’ legal costs as a result of the mess.  PokerStars player “ka$ino” ended up winning almost $1.4 million after being moved from second to first place after “TheV0id’s” disqualification.

  • On August 26, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) will hold a charity tournament at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado to raise money for paralyzed veterans.  Not coincidentally, the Democratic National Convention begins in Denver on August 25.  Poker pros Andy Bloch and Barry Greenstein, two of the most outspoken players for poker players’ rights, are scheduled to participate, as is actor Ben Affleck.  Seats in the tournament will cost $500.  Two levels of sponsorships are available for $3,500 and $7,000, both of which include tournament entries.  For those who just wish to watch, a spectator seat will run $250.  The winner of the tournament will receive a $10,000 seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event.
