  • This weekend marks Ante Up for Africa weekend at UltimateBet.com.  Two tournaments are being held each night Friday through Sunday, with the entry fees going to the Ante Up for Africa charity which aims to assist those affected by the crisis in Darfur, Sudan.  The tourneys are fairly cheap – only $10 + $10 and $20 + $20.  The payout structure will be the same as any $10 or $20 tournament, with the only real difference being that entry fee is higher than normal in order to help the charity.  UltimateBet’s pros will be participating, as will actor Don Cheadle.  The poker room will also chip in additional prizes, such as Phil Hellmuth’s black belt and white belt courses, tournament entries, magazine subscriptions, and gas cards.

  • Thursday night, “Judith75” hit the largest online poker bad beat jackpot of all time when her quad nines lost to “Hiyall’s” club royal flush at PartyPoker.com.  The total jackpot was the first to eclipse $1 million, topping out at $1,013,381.63, which eeked out the previous online record of $992,000.  The entire jackpot, unfortunately, is not actually distributed, as 20 percent is held back to start the next jackpot and 10 percent is kept by Party Poker.  Of the distributed amount, Germany’s “Judith75” received half, or $354,683.57.  “Hiyall” got 25 percent, or $177,341.79 (and the $24 in the actual pot, of course), and each of the other players dealt into the hand chopped the other 25 percent, for $22,167.72.  “ShoulderGuy” also was the victim of a bad beat at the .50/1 table, as he flopped a set of Kings, while “Judith75” flopped a set of nines and “Hiyall” flopped a gut-shot royal flush draw.  The royal flush came on the turn, while the quads hit on the river, which also gave “ShoulderGuy” a full house.  He probably feels ok about getting outdrawn, don’t you think?

  • It seems as if Yuval Bronshtein is a pretty good poker player.  Playing at Full Tilt Poker under the screen name “yuvee04,” Bronshtein won not one, but two Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) events in the same day this week.  The first was event 14, $500 HORSE, where he won $70,413.  Then he beat over 2,400 players in event 15, the $200 turbo no-limit hold’em tournament, to win $101,975.  This feat also made him the all-time leader in FTOPS victories with three.  Last year, he won $100 buy-in seven card stud eight-or-better tournament with a top prize of “only” $17,000.  Bronshtein, from Atlanta, has also amassed more than $160,000 on the live tournament circuit, the bulk of which came from a 3rd place finish in a pot-limit hold’em event at the 2007 World Series of Poker.
