Lycos, Inc. released “The Lycos 50” year-end today, revealing the fifty most popular search terms on its search engine for 2006. The word “poker” topped the list, beating out searches for Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, MySpace, and Pokemon.
Poker debuted on the annual list in 2004, coming in tenth and climbed to fourth in 2005. This year, search activity for poker soared 434 percent.
Poker did not make the top ten in either AOL or Yahoo searches, although it is not known if the search term was far behind or not.
It is a bit interesting to see the top ten search terms for the different engines. Eight of Yahoo’s top ten are celebrities, while the other two are WWE and American Idol. AOL’s are much more general, with weather being the number one search term, followed by things such as dogs, cars, games, and horoscope (American Idol was fourth). Lycos’ top ten is more of a mix of celebrities, hobbies, and computer related terms (and WWE).
