The California State Poker Championships, held in September, included, as many poker series do, a ladies event. But, somehow, this event did not quite go off as advertised. For reasons only they can answer, six men, including former Major League Baseball behemoth, Jose Canseco, decided to enter the tournament. To the disappointment of many in attendance, there was really nothing the casino management could do to stop them. Sure, Tournament Director Cheri Dokken tried to appeal to the men that only women were allowed to play, but they didn’t care. Because it was a public event, the casino was not permitted to discriminate against anybody who was willing to fork over the buy-in. So really, the “ladies” and “seniors” designations on many tournaments are more like suggestions. Fortunately, a woman (Gabriela Wagner) won the tournament.
