Last week, poker media outlet, PokerNews.com, reported that Europe-facing online poker room, Everest Poker, was the subject of takeover rumors. No details as to who the suitor might be were given. Friday, Everest responded to the chatter, saying the rumors were unfounded. “The rumours are not true at all. We have been doing really well as an independent site and want to remain independent. This is the first we have heard of this and we have big plans for the year ahead,” said Melissa Pauléat. If the site’s popularity is any indication, Ms. Pauléat is correct in her assessment of the company’s success. The Quebec-based poker room is currently ranked sixth in cash game traffic, according to PokerSiteScout.com, and only ranks behind PartyPoker.com amongst those rooms that are both independent and that do not allow U.S. customers. Some believe Everest’s statement is a smokescreen, but as of now, there is no reason not to believe the company when it says that it has not been approached with a buyout offer.
