As the Nevada presidential nominating caucuses drew near, the Las Vegas Sun published a briefing on where the three major Democratic candidates stood on six key issues to the state. One happened to be internet gambling. For those keeping score at home, it turns out that while none of them out-and-out support online gambling, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are at least willing to investigate it further. The American Gaming Association would like to see a bill passed to fund a comprehensive study to determine whether or not online gambling could be regulated. Clinton supports this position. She wants to be sure that it is safe for individual players, as well feeling confident that U.S. business can compete with the already established international firms. Obama also supports a regulation study, but is worried that the internet is “a Wild West of illegal activity.” John Edwards, on the other hand, flat-out opposes the legalization of online gambling, doubting that it can be regulated. Why he is not willing to at least support a study to see if it can, in fact, be regulated, is unknown.
