Betfair.com, the premier sponsor of the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe, has done something that is unheard of in poker: it has given back to the players. This week, Befair injected £57,000 into the no-limit hold’em main event prize pool, boosting it to a healthy £1,000,000. With 362 entrants, the prize pool was £3,620,000, which meant the first prize was originally £943,010. But by topping off the purse, Betfair has assured the winner a million pound payday. Ben Fried, Head of Poker at Betfair.com said, “We are in this for the long-term, and this is the most prestigious poker event in Europe. I think a £1 million first prize sets a good benchmark to build upon in the years to come.” Thirty-six players will cash in the main event, all making at least a £17,000 profit from a £10,000 buy-in.
